What is Options Trading and Why?
Options trading involves trading an option. An option is a contract giving you the right to buy or sell a stock at a set price (strike price) by a set date (expiration date).
You are making a prediction on how the stock’s price will move in the future and you profit (considerably more) if the stock moves in your favor.
There are only two types of options, each of which you can buy or sell -
A Call Option is a contract that represents the right to buy a stock at a set price by a set date. When you Buy Calls, you receive the right to buy shares in exchange for a premium payment. When you Sell Calls, you receive a premium payment in exchange for an obligation to sell shares.
A Put Option is a contract that represents the right to sell a stock at a set price by a set date. When you Buy Puts, you receive the right to sell shares in exchange for a premium payment. When you Sell Puts, you receive a premium payment in exchange for an obligation to buy shares.
Options are powerful because they can enhance an individual’s portfolio. They do this through added income, aggressive returns, and offering an effective hedge against a declining stock market to limit downside losses. Note that Options trading is suited only for aggressive investors who are open to taking on additional risk in exchange for potentially greater rewards.
